Hecatoncheires

The  hecatoncheires is a very powerful monster from the Epic Level Handbook.  Some of the monsters in this book seem like they should be foes of gods, rather than mortal heroes.

"Each time they were released, an old patheon fell.  Few creatures can stand up to a hecatoncheires in combat, not even the gods."

I decided to introduce one of these to Bal-Kriav.  It doesn't roam the lands or anything crazy like that.  One was created in the Aerie of Dragons, giving rise to a place called Humlazakhêr.

The Godstone, an obelisk created by Ares and Torog, tells the tale of them creating a colossal hecatoncheires.

  1. dont know how you balance fights after PCs hit 18 or 20. so many buffs, debuffs, powers, resists. anything gets through its destruction one way or another

  3. There are alot of save-or-lose spells and powers floating around when you get close to the epic levels. With a DC of 20-25 for most of the stuff getting dished out, if we don't buff saves, then with a save bonus of 6-12, we're generally looking at 23-8 = 15... roll over a 15 on a d20, or die. So, 75% chance to die if you are targeted by something resembling a sub-boss. Not to mention the "1st attacks", where they annihilate 1-2 PCs in the first 2 rounds with gore damage. :P We don't actually pre-fight buff that much (mine are self-only). We also don't get the element of surprise, unless we just fall through the ceiling.
